Texas S Ta R Chart Presentation

Week 2 Assignment - Part 3

Week 2 Assignment - Part 2

I found the information from the STaRchart very interesting. I have to say that I remember filling this out each year but I don't know who much true attention I, or maybe my colleagues too, give it.

What I focused on was Key Area part II: Educator Preparation and Development. It was the only section that my campus scored in the Early Tech category for 2 of the 3 years. I believe some of that is due to teacher turnover and possibly some software being new. I feel the majority of teachers do not feel comfortable with their lack of knowledge of products and how to implement it into the lessons. I feel many teachers are savvy at skills that help us make our tasks more efficient such as lesson plans, gradebooks, emails, etc.. but are unsure how to engage students with more technology integrated in our lessons. I think at the beginning of the year each teach should choose from a list of technology uses for the classroom. That list would create a team of teachers to collaborate together, maybe meeting once a month, to talk about ways to use the product. There should be one teacher that is more than a novice in that area on each team. Then at a staff developement there should be ideas and presentations shared to help spur and encourage other teachers to use the products. Sometimes it is about not knowing how to use the product in the classroom vs not knowing how to use it at all.

Week 1 Assignment - Part 4

The Pre-K guidlines help lay the foundation for future learning because this is the exploration stage. Students are learning the terminology and how to use basic functions such as the mouse, how to insert a CD and interacting media. Just like in any other subject if the foundation is missing there are going to be many gaps to close in future learning. If this isn't done, then students are not prepared for the world beyond the school walls. Spiraling information is the best way to ensure learning, in my personal opinion. As a 4th grade teacher, I see many students not using the keyboard correctly. Therefore, it takes them a greater amount of time to do any given assignment. Through the lower grades, this is something that is continually worked on and given multiple grades to achieve mastery.

Week 1 Assignment - Part 3

It was very interesting to review this plan. The main reason is because I never knew it existed. As fearless and trail blazing I am as a teacher in many areas, I am very nervous about teaching technology or integrating it into my subject areas. I know my students would be so engaged. With this assignment, I really have been inspired to start and at least try. As an instructional leader on my campus my plan for the remainder of the semester is to familiarize myself with the technology TEKS, use at least one component well in my classroom, share the successes or things to do differently with my team and campus so that our students will be better prepared for the world outside of the school walls.

Week 1 Assignment - Part 2

After taking the SETDA Teacher Survey and the Techonology Application Inventory, they both showed me what I already knew.... that I am in great need of help when it comes to the use of technology in my classroom. First, my school is in the process of getting us (teachers updated equipment) that will help. My strengths in technology is that I love to learn and try things. My weaknesses are that I am only proficient as some basic skills such as word documents, spreadsheet, publisher, etc... I know the reason I don't incorporate more is that I feel that there is not enough time in the day to do what I need to do much less muddle my way through adding technology. If I don't make the project clear to my students, then has it truly benefited them? I wish that my campus/district gave more development in learning some ways to use technology in our lessons. Many times I just don't know how to integrate more technology based ideas in my plans.
My favorite staff development was Kilgo training. It was such an eye opening time for me as a teacher and it transformed the way I plan and teach. Saying that, that same process is how I need to attack the technology TEKS which I hate to say that I do not know. I need to look at the verb in the TEK and know what my 4th graders should be doing before they leave me and not rely on the computer class that they attend once a week to do all of the work.
While, yes these assessments didn't tell me anything knew, yet what they did do was light a fire to get me to start somewhere--- learning my technology TEKS.
